About Mary Ann

Mary Ann Keough, Author

Mary Ann Keough is an author, grant writer, registered nurse, and retired attorney. Birthing the Republic of Ireland is her first book, inspired by her Irish immigrant great-grandfather’s legacy. Her journey began after a providential encounter at a hospice conference led her to Dublin to serve as a nurse at a Peace Camp for Catholic and Protestant children from Northern Ireland. The camp, funded by the U.S. government’s Northern Ireland peace initiative, brought 100 children affected by community violence to Galway City for ten days of healing activities, peacebuilding, and shared experiences.

A decade later, one of the camp’s attendees invited Mary Ann to Belfast, sparking multiple trips across Ireland and Northern Ireland to research her great-grandfather’s story. Through this journey, she discovered the significant role Irish Americans played in the fight for Ireland’s independence. Her great-grandfather’s mission to free Ireland from British rule remains an unfinished legacy.
